Promise Keepers

This is an update to my article on the Promise Keepers which was published in Vanguard #2.
TWO CORRECTIONS to last time's article and an apology.
1. Page 29, middle column. Reference was made to Lonnie Frisbee. I stated that he died in the mid-eighties. This was incorrect. He died in 1993.
2. Also on page 29, third column, I listed the places where the first consultations on PKs were held in UK. I then went on to state that all the venues were churches that had embraced the "Toronto Blessing". This was incorrect. Sutton Coldfield Baptist Church has NOT done so, nor are they likely to host any more PK meetings. I apologise from my heart for making this serious error and causing distress to the church and its minister.

Al Dager's Media Spotlight has produced a full report on the Stand in the Gap Rally in Washington, which was referred to in the article. At the rally, the PK leaders claimed to make a Covenant with God, and led those attending into this Covenant. Quoting Dale Schlafer:

"Our great and awesome God and Father, in Your sovereignty You have brought us to Washington DC, in the name of Your only Son, Jesus Christ. You have met us and dealt with us in powerful ways. You have been faithful with all of Your promises and loving in all your ways. We now stand before You broken and humbled, called and strengthened by Your Holy Spirit to enter into this covenant with You."

This is nonsense. There is but One Covenant for us to enter into - the one Jesus bought for us with His precious blood.

Further, they also reveal how deep the ecumenism has gone, whereby Dale Schlafer and Glenn Wagner (two top PK executives) actually prostrated themselves on the ground before the "sacrament" in a Roman Catholic service:

Sengenberger (a Catholic men's movement leader) invited representatives from Promise Keepers to visit the university. "We had some frank discussions and told them we needed to see some Catholic involvement on the leadership level."

When Steubenville hosted its first men's conference in 1995, Sengenberger invited two Promise Keepers officials to attend: Dale Schlafer, who was at that time chairman of the board, and Glenn Wagner, a vice president.

"It was their first time in a Catholic evangelistic setting," Sengenberger said. "They were impressed. When they were leaving, we invited them to go through our book store and take out any books they wanted. They went home with all kinds of theology books, Vatican II teachings. Dale took a set of the Liturgy of the Hours ... The following year, he told me he'd incorporated it into his daily prayer, so Glenn asked for one too."

Both men returned to Steubenville for the 1996 men's conference, where Sengenberger took them to a Eucharistic Holy Hour.

"I took them aside and explained what we were doing, how this only makes sense if you believe in the Real Presence of Jesus. That night we were down by the stage, and I remember going down on my knees, then prostrate, down on my face - and right next to me was Glenn Wagner, doing the same thing." (from "Our Sunday Visitor", 20th July, 1997; a Roman Catholic newspaper.)

Copies of the full report are available from: Media Spotlight, PO Box 290, Redmond. WA 98073-0290 USA. They operate on donation only basis.

Lastly, one classic spelling mistake: Page 21, middle column. For "ewe", read "yew" you see.

God Bless, Philip.
