Henry Hinn Walks in his Big Brother's Footsteps
In a world of freedom of speech and religion, one may expect a spectrum of ministers ranging from the great to the mediocre. Vancouver TV evangelist Henry Hinn has evidently found his niche in the lower wavelengths. Nevertheless, he has found great success behind the pulpit, thanks to his brother Benny. Despite the occasional difficulties, the trade has great benefits. The two brothers obviously know this. Here are some observations:
  • They've owned Mercedes-Benz cars.
  • They've lived in opulent mansions (worth over $700,000 each) located in gated communities.
  • They extensively travel around the world, and appear on the same platform.
  • They've used nearly identical names for their respective churches.
Orlando Christian Center vs. Vancouver Christian Center
  • They've had their share of legal problems.

How does Henry afford this lifestyle? He and his wife, Donna, receive a combined weekly salary of $2,000 Can. They both head a church of about 250 people (down from 600 members several years ago). I heard Big Brother Benny once say that 1,000 first-class people attend it. But I could not count more than 300 chairs in his church-converted warehouse in the city of Richmond (a suburb of Vancouver, B.C.) When I visited it, the church was half-empty.

Henry's 8-bathroom Mansion

Henry Hinn The Vancouver Sun reported on August 18, 1997, that Henry was moving with his family into an opulent home while he was facing legal action from a church member to repay a $250,000 Can. loan. The newspaper quote a letter that Henry sent to this individual: "I hope you can forgive me in your heart for any damage I have done. Charlie, you are like a father to me. And I will never gorget all that you have done for me. Maybe I still can be like a son.... Please know that I have no control over this situation. I have had to move out of my house and have nowhere to go."His letter, however, failed to mention that an extravagant 8-bathroom mansion was being built just for them!! Henry Hinn's mansion Henry suffered a number of legal battles. His ministry and church have been hit by a lawsuit and threats of foreclosure. Both have been resolved, thanks to a wealthy Singapore businessman, Jeffrey Tan. This man not only rescued Henry, he also became his neighbor in this lavish gated compound. Their friendship, however, was short-lived.

The Richmond News wrote on April 14, 1999: "Tan has since left the church and said he could not comment on his relationship with Henry because of a written agreement he signed before leaving the church." He has learned to take his precautions.

Henry remarked that the public's perception of evangelists is based on a stereotype. And that stereotype is this: Evangelists are phoney crooks who only want money. Clearly, he doesn't make any effort not to promote it.
